Our loam soils act as a sponge, and our rootstocks have a taproot to reach down and soak up the winter rain and nutrients throughout the length of the growing season. Their drought tolerance is well suited to our Mediterranean climate. The vines struggle and provide a small and concentrated yield using less water. We rotate cover crops to till into the soil at bud-break based on the vines’ nutrient-needs for the new year. Our vineyard is scattered with owl boxes maintaining a balanced ecosystem for birds, insects, and birds of prey. Our grapes are hand harvested. Careful fruit handling allows us to be hands-off in the cellar. We do not use pesticides or defoliants and are a certified Napa Green winery.

In August 2024, O’Brien Estate was awarded a competitive Healthy Soils Program grant of $59,988.70 from the California Department of Food and Agriculture, administered by the California Land Stewardship Institute — the organization behind our Fish Friendly Farming certification.
The three-year award funds work we were already committed to: planting hedgerows along vineyard borders to shelter pollinators and beneficial insects, spreading wood-chip mulch to hold moisture and rebuild organic matter, and moving to no-till management so the soil’s structure and carbon stay where they belong — in the ground.
Across 9.69 acres, the state estimates these practices will draw down roughly 8 metric tons of CO₂ equivalent every year. The award funds three specific practices — hedgerow planting, wood-chip mulching, and no-till residue and tillage management — together with soil testing thirteen times a year for three years to verify the results.
